· Cork – Cork is something most people think of when they think of wine. Cork is a substance made from the bark of a cork tree, often found in the Mediterranean. Because it comes from the bark of the tree, the tree does not have to be cut down to harvest it. Cork is fire resistant, it has anti-microbial properties, and is easy to maintain. It is also a natural insect repellant making it ideal for anyone that wants to enjoy a beautiful home and keep the bugs away. It can suit any design or color scheme in the home, and generally lasts between 10 and 30 years.

· Bamboo – Bamboo is another natural option. It’s very similar to hardwood, but is lightweight and generally comes in many different hues. You can customize it. Bamboo comes from natural vegetation that takes about three to five years to grow, which is much less time than it takes a tree to grow.

· Linoleum – Many people think of vinyl when they consider linoleum but the two are very different. Vinyl is a synthetic substance made from harmful chemicals; linoleum is made from cork dust, linseed oil, tree resins and wood flour as well as a few other natural ingredients. It is water resistant and fire resistant. This substance used to be very commonplace as flooring but fell out of favor when vinyl flooring became popular. It is becoming more popular again as consumers seek environmentally friendly types of flooring.

· Concrete – While it may seem odd, concrete is actually a very popular type of flooring even in residential settings. You can polish it and tint it and use it as your primary floor or cover it if you want with a rug; although after polishing it is beautiful and looks more perfect than tile. It is durable and once put into the floor never needs to be replaced.

A Guide to Selecting Floors

When it comes to selecting home flooring there is a wealth of different types, styles and selections to choose from. The task may often seem daunting. Depending on the style of home that you have and type of traffic that you expect to come from each room, you have much to think about.

· Laminate – Laminate is much like hardwood but easier to install and less expensive. Laminate is made from materials that are wood-based and laminated on top of wood grain. These are engineered floors.

· Bamboo – This is a lightweight floor that is very humidity resistant, but may be more expensive that other options. It is environmentally friendly and looks good in many kitchen areas.

· Linoleum – This is one of the more popular choices particularly as it is a green choice, not one of the choices that depletes the rain forests. It is made of wood flour and rosins. It is made of natural products, and offers bactericidal properties. It is often used in hospitals and clinics. Linoleum is shock resistant and water-resistant, comes in many colors and is easy-to-clean.

· Tile – Tile is very popular, natural, and comes in many different colors. It is easier to maintain than some other natural products including marble, costs less and is very durable.

· Vinyl – This is perhaps one of the most affordable options for flooring, often convenient becomes it comes in many self-stick options. The thicker the vinyl you choose, the more durable it is. It is a good choice for high moisture areas.

How to Install Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring can offer your floors a beautiful new look with very minimal effort. Before installing your laminate floors it is important to clean the subfloor and remove all base molding. This prepares the area you plan to install the laminate flooring in.

You will also want to install a vapor barrier, which needs to be done one row at a time. Start from the longest wall of the room. The manufacturer typically provides directions. Next, be sure to trim door jambs, so the flooring can easily slide under the jamb. The easiest way to do this is by using a flat saw.

Now you are ready to begin installing the first row of laminate.

Installing the Laminate Flooring

When installing the laminate flooring, it is best to lay planks parallel to the longest wall. When installing your planks, place the first plank along the groove of the plank facing the wall. Use .5” spacers against the wall. Place your first plank against this. The spaces serve to create an expansion gap in the event the floor needs to breathe, so the floor does not warp.

You will cover the gap later with molding. Spacers also provide a base to install against. The spacers should be placed every 1’ along the wall at the edge of the plank of adjoining walls. For each plank that you install, be sure to match the groove and tap each groove into place. You can do this using scrap flooring so that planks are protected.

All pieces should fit well together without gaps along the lengths of the planks.

Stagger the joints of your flooring together. When beginning new rows of flooring make sure to offset each row from six to eight inches so the joints at the end are not aligned row-to-row. This can make your floor weak. You will need to trim the last plan to fit, and then install the floor ends and thresholds of your laminate that the floor butts up against. You can then remove your spacers and put base molding in to cover your expansion gaps.

Painting Your Hard Wood Floors

There was once a period in time in which painting hard wood floors was actually the most fashionable thing to do. From solid coloring to intricate designs hard wood floors were definitely the past way to show off your fashion sense to guest. Now, the trend has almost died down, but if you love the look of a painted floor you can easily get the look without a problem.

The first step in painting your floor is to sand it down. This will allow the paint to hold better while also clearing up scuffs and abrasions in the wood. You will also want to tape off the edges of the room so that you won't get paint on the washboards. Once you're taped off then go around the edges of the room with your chosen primer and a larger paintbrush. This process can be moved to a paint roller once the edges have been finished.

Of course, if you intend on doing designs you might want to paint a base coat and then tape off the design area. If you are not then it safe just to paint the edges of the room and move on to a paint roller. Remember to be careful while you paint as you won't have the best pathway to get out of the room. You might want to consider painting half of the room and the resting so you can give part of the room a chance to dry.

Once the floors have been painted you can decide if you need a second coat or not. If not then you wait a couple of days for the paint to set into the wood before you move in furniture and rugs. After you've waited and moved your goods into the room you can enjoy your beautiful floors and show them off to your friends.

You don't have to stress too much over painting your wood floors. The job can be a lot of fun and can really give you some amazing benefits you would have never though possible. So, if you're sick of your old and damaged floors try giving them a make over with a coat of paint!

New Ways to Fix the Toilet

Your toilet can be a nightmare if you are constantly battling with a clog that won't go away. Between the wasted water and messes on the floor your home can become unsanitary and frustrating fast. There are, however, many different ways to get rid of a clog without having to call in a plumber.

One simple and common way is to use a plunger. This is great for a quick fix and simple to do. Make sure you don't flush the toilet more than once as this will cause the clog to get worse. When you notice the toilet won't flush grab the plunger and place it over the hole. Press up and down on the plunger a few times until the clog disappears.

Another easy way to get rid of the clog if you don't have a plunger around is to add a few drops of dish soap to the clogged toilet. Then you will want to spread out newspapers or old towels that can prevent the polluted water from getting on your floor. Once you've prepped for this bring a pot of warm tap water to the restroom and from waist level dump it into the toilet. The force will help get rid of the clog and flush the toilet for you.

If neither of these methods work for you then take apart an old wire coat hanger. Wrap one end of the hanger with an old rag to help prevent damage to your porcelain. Carefully  push the rag end of the hanger down the toilet and move it around in a circular motion, this will help clear the clog and clear out anything that might cause further problems.

You don't have to be afraid when your toilet clogs up. These easy fixes can be done in the home without spending a lot of money. Now, when the toilet clogs you will know exactly what to do when your toilet fails to flush.

Makeover Your Home in a Jiffy

A lot of people look for ways to get rid of their old boring looks while working with a budget. Putting up wallpaper is a great way to transform your home into a well decorated room you will love spending time in. Of course, installing wallpaper can be tough if you don't know what you're doing!

In order to get wallpaper up and looking great you need to wash down your walls first and remove any previous layers of wallpaper that might be up. This will give you a smooth look that will make your wallpaper look professionally installed. Once you've wiped down the walls you'll want to gather up a bucket of warm water and sponge to help you activate the adhesive of your wallpaper.

********************************************************************************

Before you go any further it is best to measure out and precut your wallpaper into strips so you can easily install without having to constantly stop. Once you have the correct strips then you will want to place your first strip into the warm water. When you pull it out of the water fold the paper in half with the design on the outside and make sure not to crease the paper. This will help to activate the adhesive, so you can keep your new wallpaper looking great for years.

After the adhesive is ready to go place the first strip on the wall and make sure to line it up with the correct points so you will have a flawless look you'll love. When you have the first piece up then you should smooth out the edges and make sure there are no air bubbles. One great way to do this is to use the sponge you already have out to wipe down the walls.

The first piece is always the hardest to get up, but once you have it settled in then you can start adding the other pieces. The trick is to place them as close together as possible so there is no holes in your amazing new design. When you have all of the pieces up and smoothed out then you can trim up and edges you might have with the a box cutter or other crafting night.

Once you have finished it is important to stand back and take in the room you've just created. This step can be the most rewarding and will give you a boost of confidence, but you took on a challenge without having to hire a professional!

In general, a drywall panel is made of an inner core made from gypsum plaster that is sandwiched between two thick layers of paper. The gypsum plaster is produced by heating gypsum, which is a very soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, to about 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

The plaster is mixed with fiber, foaming agent, starch, and other various additives to create gypsum plaster. Special additives can be added so that the plaster is mildew resistant and so that it can be fire resistant. After the Gypsum plaster dries up, the sandwich becomes strong enough and the resulting material can be used for building.

Now, Sheetrock is a type of drywall manufactured by a company known as US Gypsum. Yet, there are hundreds of other companies that also manufacture their own version of drywall using their own specific procedures. One could say that Sheetrock was such a good product that it became synonymous with drywall when US Gypsum introduced it into the market.

So there you have it. Sheetrock is classified as drywall, but drywall cannot be classified as a type of Sheetrock. But stripping all that away, both are basically the same, at least in their main chemical components.

The Ultimate Power Tool

When doing home repairs, there is not a single basic power tool as useful as the electric drill. Indeed, the drill is an indispensable part of the modern tool box. The drill will help you make holes in various materials and fasten materials together. Some of the most common uses for the drill are woodworking and metal working. Now, there are several factors to consider when choosing a drill. Here we will consider some of these factors:

1) How comfortable? One of the most important factors to consider, if not the most important, is how comfortable is the power drill to handle and to use. A tool should be an extension of your hand. Thus, it is important to get a drill that not only has the features you are looking for but that also that it feels comfortable in your hands and doesn't weigh you down.

2)
Wood Windows Warehouse can help you with any of your custom wood windows and door needs. If you are looking for wood windows in Piedmont and Berkeley, we are here to help.
Power: In general, higher wattage means sturdier parts in a drill and thus the ability to take more abuse. For home projects, a range of 500 to 1000 should be all you need. But if you are planning to use the drill a lot, then it is not a bad idea to consider a more powerful drill.

3) Speed: Multiple speeds allow for versatility. A drill that allows for multiple speeds will help you drill different types of materials. A general rule of thumb is that the harder a material is, the slower the speed should be.

4) Chuck: The chuck is the attachment where the bit is inserted, having jaws that grip the bit.

A chuck can be keyed, that is, the jaws can be tightened or or loosened with a key. A chuck can also be keyless. In a keyless chuck, the chuck can be tightened or loosened by hand.

- Indeed, the drill is an indispensable tool for easy home repair. It is a good idea to know your money and get a drill that will suit you best.
