Drywall vs Sheetrock. What is the difference?

Ah, interesting comparison. Yes, drywall vs Sheetrock. Also, interesting question... Yes, what is the difference? Yet, the answer is quite simple. If you ask a home builder, the answer you will get will be that sheetrock and drywall are exactly the same, that both are construction materials used for the same purpose as wall base material. So, then, is there a difference? The answer is also simple. Yes, there is a difference, if only ever so slight.

In general, a drywall panel is made of an inner core made from gypsum plaster that is sandwiched between two thick layers of paper. The gypsum plaster is produced by heating gypsum, which is a very soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, to about 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

The plaster is mixed with fiber, foaming agent, starch, and other various additives to create gypsum plaster. Special additives can be added so that the plaster is mildew resistant and so that it can be fire resistant. After the Gypsum plaster dries up, the sandwich becomes strong enough and the resulting material can be used for building.

Now, Sheetrock is a type of drywall manufactured by a company known as US Gypsum. Yet, there are hundreds of other companies that also manufacture their own version of drywall using their own specific procedures. One could say that Sheetrock was such a good product that it became synonymous with drywall when US Gypsum introduced it into the market.

So there you have it. Sheetrock is classified as drywall, but drywall cannot be classified as a type of Sheetrock. But stripping all that away, both are basically the same, at least in their main chemical components.
