However, the paint is made of materials that are not good for water, plants, and living beings in general. In fact, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, more than 64 million gallons of unused interior and exterior paint, enough paint to fill 128 Olympic swimming pools every year. So, what can be done?

The first step starts with basic clean up. 

It is important to put as much paint as possible from the painting tools you have, such as rollers and brushes, back into the paint cans. When cleaning the tools water or mineral spirits, put all of these liquids in a bucket.

Latex or water based paint is not a hazardous waste. However, latex paint should not be pour latex into storm drains, ground, creeks, rivers. It should also not be put in cans for regular trash pick up. According to the EPA, wastewater can be diposed by tipping it onto a flat, grassy area or area of soil that can retain the liquid.
